Hop on the Whole Grain Train

Your ticket to health, satisfying meals

For many, January means a fresh start, healthier habits and a month of clean eating. To us, clean eating means re-focusing on healthful, balanced and flavorful cooking. Our secret ingredient? Whole grains. They are full of nutrients—like fiber which helps lower cholesterol, magnesium for healthy blood sugar control and vitamin B3, just to name a few—plus they taste great and lend themselves to virtually any style of cooking.

Inspired by Sunset Magazine's "16 Ways with Whole Grains" in this month's issue, we're saluting some of our favorite super grains that you'll want to eat for more than just the month of January.

rustichella whole farroWhole Grain Farro from Rustichella d'Abruzzo

Farro—an unhybridized, or pure form of wheat with the husk intact—has a rich, nutty flavor that plays well in hearty soups and warm winter salads.

Your golden ticket: Make a warm farro salad of cooked farro tossed with halved cherry tomatoes, sliced black olives, capers and a simple dressing of extra virgin olive oil, a drizzle of Colatura and pinch of hot Controne Pepper.

principato di lucedio venere black riceVenere Black Rice from Principato di Lucedio

This obsidian-colored rice has a deep, nutty flavor with subtle aromas of toasted rice and freshly-made popcorn. It adds a dramatic pop of color to even the simplest preparations like fried rice and rice pilaf.

Your golden ticket: Delight in our assistant buyer, Asha's, award-winning recipe for Forbidden Rice Salad with Thai Coconut-Lime Dressing.

rancho gordo quinoaWhite Quinoa from Rancho Gordo

Did you know that quinoa—one of the most well-known super grains—isn't actually a grain at all? It's actually more closely related to spinach, beets and chard. This protein-packed seed has a mild flavor that lends itself to both savory and sweet reparations.

Your golden ticket: Dress cooked quinoa with zesty Agrumato Lemon Oil and top whatever vegetables you have on hand—we love the fresh combination of sliced cucumber, radishes, plenty of chopped mint and crumbled feta cheese.

massa organics brown riceOrganic Whole Grain Brown Rice from Massa Organics

This Sacramento Valley-grown brown rice is the definition of what brown rice should be—nutty, subtly sweet with a nice toothsome texture. Plus, it's organic, sustainably-grown and non-GMO.

Your golden ticket: Satisfy your sweet tooth with a rich, satisfying bowl of brown rice pudding (it makes a great breakfast too topped with your favorite fresh fruit).
